Take after-hours calls

Wake the person on call when a caller is waiting out of hours.

Standby can wake whoever is on call when a caller is waiting out of hours, like a pager: callers wait in an on-call queue and never get anybody's personal number. An on-call line explains how it works from the caller's side and the on-call person's, step by step.

In short: the app wakes them; they take the call in Amazon Connect, signed in and Available as usual. The full guide, with a button that sets everything up in your AWS account, is in the console under On-call → After-hours calls.

The recommended way: a dedicated queue

  1. Create the queue, its number and its flows with the template in the console. It creates STANDBY-QUEUE, a hold message with a time limit, and optionally a phone number.
  2. Add the queue to the routing profile of everyone on the rotation, at priority 1 with no delay. Standby can't do this for you, and without it nobody is offered the call.
  3. Point a rotation at the queue.
  4. Write a rule: Contacts waiting in a queue on that queue, threshold 0. A threshold of 1 would wait for a second caller.
  5. Promote the rule now rather than after a week of shadow: any caller there is one you want answered.
  6. Make a test call. Expect two to five minutes before someone answers: Standby sees the caller within a minute, then they wake, sign in and go Available.

Using a queue you already have

This works too, but your flow must put callers into the queue out of hours rather than playing a closed message, and rules have no hours of their own: a threshold-0 rule fires whenever anyone waits, day or night. Limit the rotation to after hours, and expect incidents in your history during the day.
